Alexandra Mitiku (b.1992) is a Korean-Ethiopian artist and poet using the concept of paradise as a segue to explore migration and imperialism, particularly looking at the role of imagination and desire.
As a form of world building, she creates modern mythologies by connecting stories of the past with current realities. Materiality is the main narrator in her works and is often inspired by the poetry she writes. Created primarily with organic and recycled elements her works are bridges between memory, landscape and body. Unique to her paintings are the use of clay as the primary medium, contrasted with indigo, charcoal and ink.
Her works have most recently been acquired by Kiasma Contemporary art museum, Southnord Gallery, and exhibited in a solo show at Titanik Gallery. Currently Alexandra is working on a 3-year long project the bird people, which is an accumulation of evolving artworks.
